Shift differential is paid at 1.00 per hour for swing shift and 1.15 per hour for graveyard.  Promotion to Public Safety Dispatcher is made upon successful completion of one year probation.

THE POSITION

The Public Safety Dispatcher serves as the primary link between the public and the emergency services for police, fire and medical aid.  Dispatchers are expected to receive emergency and non-emergency calls from the public for the Police and Fire departments, as well as emergency calls for other City departments.  Each call is evaluated and the appropriate response of city personnel and equipment is initiated.  Dispatchers must maintain contact with field units and accurately record their status.  Evaluations and decisions are frequently made on an independent basis with after-the-fact supervisory review.  Most work is accomplished using a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.  Responsibilities also include using the NCIC/CJIS systems, maintaining written radio logs or other records, and related duties as assigned.  The public safety dispatcher trainee is expected to complete the training program in 9-12 months and consistently demonstrate the skills learned prior to completing probation. REQUIREMENTS

Applicants  must have graduated from High School or possess a GED.  Applicants should have the experience and/or education which provides the following abilities:  Ability to speak clearly and concisely in English; react quickly, efficiently and calmly in an emergency situation and adopt an effective course of action;  dispatch public safety equipment in a coordinated manner;  follow written and oral directions;  relay messages exactly as received;  learn how to operate computer terminals including use of the CAD system and software;  maintain written radio logs and other records;  type at a speed of 35 words per minute.  Typing ability must be marked on the application.  A supplemental checklist must be completed and attached to the application.  Candidates possessing a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certificate are highly desirable.
